A positive collection of news curated to remind you of the good.
As someone who reads a lot of news professionally, I can tell you: There’s a lot more out there to worry about than you can actually worry about productively. I am the person behind the curtain reviewing stories, who they are told by, assessing tone and position and politic. And even though I still can’t look at pictures of animal abuse, I have developed a few vital filtering skills that allow me to think, comment, and act on the news productively without a box of tissues and a bottle of antidepressants.
You have to be able to compartmentalize, to lock a story down at its actual size and scope to keep it from snowballing into a paralyzing threat. If you allowed your mind to slip into that level of concern for everything you read or hear, it would be crippling. And that’s not beneficial to anyone.
You simply need to know where to find the rainbows and unicorns — and how to make seeking and celebrating positive stories a part of your daily routine.
Are you part of a puppy community on X where you can scroll for a few guilty minutes through cute pics of pooches? Or National Geographic Nature? Or funny inspirational channels? Don’t feel like you’re wasting your time: Everyone should have a healthy emotional outlet for decompressing. In fact, having a light and inviting space in your digital world is a necessary part of being an equally productive news connoisseur, community member and citizen. No one can carry the full weight of only the bad.
When it comes to news, there is good news. Here’s a few offerings from my week of scouring that I hope help to remind you that change and improvement are happening all around us — you just need to know where to look.
Politics — See, we can all work together if we put in the effort. Learn more about how this group of governors is working to reduce partisanism in politics and find common-sense solutions that people can get behind, regardless of the color of their stripes. (R) Spencer Cox of Utah and (D) Jared Polis of Colorado kick off the Disagree Better initiative.
Climate — It’s hard to imagine that elephants or donkeys would argue that their young don’t have a right to a healthy and thriving environment. So why is there so much disagreement? Huge problems — like our changing climate — can be daunting. But there are trailblazers out there leading the way: Just look to Montana.
Technology — The cat might be out of the bag on AI, and even though it’s too late to uninvent machine learning, that doesn’t mean we can’t still work to improve (and harness!) responsible use. Here’s how the Godfather of AI Geoffrey Hinton envisions a way to keep AI loyal to team Human.
Workplace — The DEI movement is navigating backlash as American institutions, policymakers, and universities continue to grapple with the role of race in our society. So what impact does all the talk have on the places we work? It’s often hard to tell beyond the narrow scope of our own lived experiences. But as companies like Glassdoor are proving, DEI is only dead where leaders have chosen to kill it off. Transparent and measurable DEI goals still have the power to create workplaces where everyone wins.
Culture — Sharing love and kindness: That’s what I would call Beyonce’s bold move to spend 100k to help ensure concert goers made it home safely following a performance in D.C. that was delayed by severe weather. This is a heart-warming example of give-back with big impact!
See, it’s not so bad. Follow Maui’s lead and take care of one another!
Thanks for taking a moment to focus on what matters most — finding ways to be more cooperative, collaborative, inclusive and respectful with everyone we interact with. I hope that checking out these recent stories contributed in a positive way to your daily reflection. It’s good news!
